On Dec. 11, 1951, Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees announced his retirement. Playing in only 116 games during the 1951 season, “Joe D” batted a mediocre .263 with a mere 12 home runs. The Hall of Famer ended his career with a batting average of .325 and 361 home runs. DiMaggio passed up the chance to play the 1952 season for a potential salary of $100,000.
